Maneuverable and reliable transport of tower crane components

At Stravers Torenkranen, reliability is key, especially when it comes to transporting their cranes. Since its founding in 1987, the company has grown into an organization with around 125 cranes, operating on construction sites, petrochemical plants, and shipyards. Assembly and disassembly are carried out entirely in-house using mobile cranes, which requires transport equipment that performs reliable day in, day out. That’s why Stravers uses several Broshuis trailers, including two 6-axle semi low loaders: one with pendle axles (PL2) and one with independent wheel suspension (SL2). Two additional self-tracking semi low loaders will soon be added to the fleet.
Well-considered transport
The expansion of the crane fleet with a 300-ton and a 400-ton mobile crane also introduced new requirements for ballast transport. For the 300-ton crane, a dedicated ballast trailer typically carries around 54 tonnes of counterweight and crane mats. For this purpose, Stravers uses a 6-axle Broshuis PL2 semi low loader, purchased in 2023. “The pendle axles provide excellent articulation on rough terrain and allow the trailer to remain level during loading and unloading. The short turning radius also makes maneuvering much easier,” says Pascal Braam (Fleet Manager and ballast driver).
For the 400-ton crane, Stravers deploys a 6-axle Broshuis SL2 semi low loader as the first ballast trailer in the transport setup. Semi low loaders were deliberately chosen to avoid height restrictions on petrochemical sites and to allow crane components to be loaded over the ballast when required.
Maneuverability in practice
In daily operations, these trailers truly prove their value in terms of maneuverability and control. Especially in inner-city areas, where space is increasingly limited, precise steering makes all the difference. Thanks to manual steering with a radio remote control, drivers can position the trailer with great accuracy, even in confined spaces. “With the manual steering, we can maneuver just about anywhere,” Pascal explains. “That gives us a lot of confidence during operations. The steering is easy to use, and our drivers really appreciate how user-friendly the trailers are.”
