Wind turbine transport
Achieving the sustainability quotas is a challenge for various countries. This quota is a driver for the sectors in sustainable energy generation. Wind energy is responsible for a large part of the renewable energy. This is the reason that this industry is still growing. The turbines (as the mills in the course are called) are placed on land as well as in seas and oceans. Where in the past they were more often placed on shore, a shift is gradually taking place towards offshore.
From on shore to offshore
The change from onshore to offshore offers wind turbine manufacturers the opportunity to build larger turbines. The rules for offshore are different and therefore offer more generation options. As a result, the tower parts, hub, nacelle and blades are getting bigger and bigger. Manufacturers are increasingly looking at dividing the parts to facilitate transport. This is not always easy, because firmness always remains a critical factor. Windmill manufacturers are responding to these changes and are increasingly able to meet this demand.
Transport by road
The ever-growing parts of the turbine also have to be transported. Because in addition to offshore, many turbines are still being built on land. Not every manufacturer is close to the water. This also means that land transport remains necessary. The transport of these wind turbine parts is often outsourced to companies that specialize in this. When transporting over land, a carrier is often bound by many laws and regulations. For example, a blade may only cross a certain number of meters. This determines how long the trailer must be in order to transport the blade. For example, there are trailers that extend 4 or even 5 times in order to reach the correct length to legally transport blades. In addition to height, weight is also often a challenge. If nacelle and hub get bigger and heavier, it means that bigger trailers are needed.
The unloading location is also often a major challenge for a transporter. The ideal location for a turbine often cannot be reached by an easy route. That is why the trailers often have to be designed in such a way that they can still reach the unloading location. In some cases it is so inconvenient that they have to transport their cargo on an SPMT.
