Transporting an 80t, 4.5 m wide and 5.4 m high Cat 990 shovel from the Netherlands to Denmark is quite a challenge. Transporter Lars Svith is up for it!
Lars Svith grew up with special transport and has carried on this passion in his business. The Danish transport company, based in Grenaa, specialises in transporting heavy equipment. Lars Svith not only organised the transport by road but also the over-water transport for this shovel. A complete transport solution is, therefore, the company's strength.
After the shovel arrives at the port of Esbjerg, Denmark, the transport by road to Aggersund Kalkværk, via Løgstør, can begin. They deploy their Broshuis 2 + 5 PL2 HD dolly low loader combination for this.
A permit must be requested to transport such a large and heavy machine. With the application for this permit, an itinerary has to be added to describe the exact route in the permit. This requires the necessary preparation in which Lars Svith gets the help of his regular pilot service company. The journey by road may only take place at certain times and faces height restrictions during the route. So transporting heavy construction machinery is not a job you do overnight. Besides experience, good preparation is essential.

This preparation is also needed on the day of transport. The first thing, for instance, is to prepare the low loader for loading the shovel. The low loader must be built in the right configuration and the gooseneck with the two-axle dolly removed from the low bed. This can easily and safely be done by the driver alone, as this low loader is easy to operate. Thus, the driver can:
- independently couple or uncouple the dolly.
- place/remove the widening supports and mattresses himself.
- operate all functions of the low loader by remote control.
After the trailer has been prepared for the load, it is a simple job to drive the shovel onto the low bed. After coupling the gooseneck with the two-axle dolly, the large machine can be secured. In the design of the low loader, the need to secure a wide variety of machines has already been taken into account. The trailer is in fact equipped with many lashing options. Once the driver has made the final check, the journey can begin together with the pilot.
During the transport, it is easy to see why Lars Svith chose a Broshuis dolly low loader combination. Thanks to the 600 mm travel of the pendulum axles, the driver can easily lift the trailer to avoid obstacles along the way. The large steering angle also comes in handy during the trip. And even tight turns can be taken easily by using additional steering on the remote control. On arrival in Aggersund Kalkværk, the driver says he is very happy with the low loader. "This trailer makes my work a lot safer and easier. It is a pleasure to work with this trailer."
