You decide your own path
When Melanie applied to Broshuis with an open application in 2015, she was given the opportunity to start. There was no fixed career path laid out for her; she simply began. And she quite literally started at the foundation.
“My first task was counting consumable stock. Every bolt, washer and nipple went into a bucket so we knew exactly what was used on a trailer. For months, I walked through production with those buckets. I was known as ‘the girl with the buckets’. It was physically demanding, but it taught me how our trailers are built and how the organisation works.”
That start played an important role in how she continued to grow. Step by step, she was given more responsibility. “I fully committed myself, took initiative, asked questions and learned something new every day. I helped out when things were busy in the Conservation, became responsible for Broshuis Parts Production and later got the opportunity to become Manager Engineering. Here, they don’t just look at what you can already do, but especially at your willingness to learn and to show it.”
In 2022, Melanie was asked if she wanted to become Operations Director. She is proud of that. “That was very special. It shows what is possible if you keep learning and continue to develop yourself. I found it exciting, but I also knew: I’ve grown into this step by step.”
At the same time, she emphasises that her path does not have to be the example.
“Not everyone wants to, or needs to, become a director. At Broshuis, you can also grow by deepening your expertise or broadening it. By becoming a specialist, leading projects or coaching others. Development looks different for everyone.”
