Transporting a 105-tonne gear unit
Sometimes the shortest distances can present the greatest challenges. This was precisely the case for Stange Spezial- und Schwertransport-Logistik during a recent project at the HOLCIM cement works in Lägerdorf.
The task? To move a massive 105-tonne gear unit within the factory. Measuring just four metres in length and five metres in height, this replacement gear unit is the largest electric cement gearbox at HOLCIM. Due to space limitations, it needed to be repositioned within the factory.
The transport was far from straightforward. The compact yet extremely heavy unit required maximum stability and precision to ensure safe handling. Adding to the complexity, the factory layout included several conveyor bridges with limited clearance, requiring careful route planning and millimetre-perfect adjustments throughout the move.
For this task, Stange relied on their Broshuis 3+7 pendle axle semi low loader. Its exceptional stability under extreme loads and advanced steering capabilities proved essential for navigating the tight confines of the factory. “This trailer is built for jobs like this,” explains Louis Stange. “It allowed us to safely move the gearbox, even with such limited space and challenging ground conditions.”
Thorough preparation was key to the project’s success. Stange’s team conducted detailed route planning to identify any potential obstacles and to ensure that the trailer could be precisely adjusted to pass safely under the low conveyor bridges. Every step of the transport was closely monitored to quickly address any issues that arose. Collaboration with crane partner Kühl Elmshorn played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth execution of the move.
Stange Spezial- und Schwertransport-Logistik, based in Hamburg, has been a trusted name in heavy and specialised transport for over 180 years. Combining a strong family tradition with a modern fleet and expert team, they handle everything from machinery to large industrial structures with precision and care.
In October 2022, Stange acquired the Broshuis 3+7-axle PL2 semi low loader, putting it into operation by August 2023 with all necessary permits. The company chose this trailer for its versatility, durability, and ability to handle heavy and oversized loads with ease. Its modular design and hydraulic ramps, capable of supporting up to 90 tonnes, were a perfect fit for their needs in transporting industrial machinery and equipment.
“The combination of reliability and flexibility made this trailer the perfect choice for us,” says Louis Stange. “It has proven itself on multiple projects, not just at HOLCIM but across our operations. The ability to expand this vehicle with a Flex axle module to 12 axles also gives us the flexibility to meet the ever-changing needs of our customers.”
We are proud to count Stange as a valued partner and wish them continued success in many future projects with this impressive combination!
