An impressive span
Over a hundred tons, that is the total weight of this impressive combination you’re seeing. For the driver Jeroen konings from Kandt BV, driving this combination is another day at the ‘’office’’. For us, it still remains an impressive sight, a 30-meter long span, making his way around the roundabout. We drove along with Jeroen and his magnificent Scania R620 with a Broshuis pendle axle low loader.
Kandt BV from ‘’Nieuwekerk aan de IJssel’’ (The Netherlands) is a foundation contractor, transporting his own materials. Kandt BV has its own trucks for this in combination with three different trailers. In addition, Kandt BV uses the services of Arjen Kandt Special transport. Arjen Kandt is a brother of Marco Kandt, founder of Kandt BV. Marco Kandt: ‘’We have a couple of special machines, which we have produced in house. Our strength is our ability to work fast. In order to be this fast, we need to be able to transport our own materials. In addition, our machines are built in a special type of way, making them ready to use in just a matter of minutes.
4-Axle
Kandt BV operates with 4 axle heavy transport tractors from MAN and Scania. Because the machines keep getting heavier, an extra axle on the trailer is needed to reduce the load on the individual axles. Marco Kandt: ‘’you could operate with 5 axle tractors, but that would make you less flexible. The 4 axles are perfectly suited for a crane trailer. (e.g. placing road plates). They are also perfectly suited for transporting materials on a semi-low loader. These activities don’t fit a trailer with 5 axles, furthermore it also makes the planning trickier. Hence why we chose for the PL low loader with a dolly axle from Broshuis. With the 1+5 axle low loader with pendle axles, most of the machines are transported efficiently.’’ For even heavier transport, we are currently working on an even bigger 1+4 pendle axle low loader from Broshuis. About the cabin
Driver Jeroen Konings is very skilled with lengthy combinations, in addition, he also knows his way around the machines from Kandt BV. ‘’In this line of work, for handling the loading and unloading, you need to be able to operate the machines yourself. You’ll get the hang of it quickly, but it should always be done carefully.’’ The weights and forces are huge, however Jeroen is no stranger to this, he knows what he’s doing. In this case, a colleague is helping him out, he is driving the heavy crawler crane on the trailer and he follows the instructions of Jeroen. The tracks made from steel on the crawler crane, crawl onto the side of the trailer, after which the crane, weighing sixty tons, maneuvers itself into the right position. The crane mast will be positioned above cabin, while hanging on a rack in the front of the trailer. This type of loading is typically Dutch, it’s definitely something special.
Torque converter
Today’s trip is going to Kampen, where this combination will steal the show during the annual Broshuis event. Jeroen is cautiously driving the mighty Scania R620 with a WSK torque converter. The boom of the crane is sticking out in front of the cabin, this requires some extra attention. Driving with these many axles on a low loader, also requires extra attention on roundabouts. If you’re not driving carefully enough while the boom of the crane sticking out, a lamppost will quickly bite the dust. The attendant gives Jeroen instructions over the phone, this way they all make it to the highway safe and sound. On the highway, the dimensions don’t matter that much, the whole span will merge with the rest of the traffic. While driving through the polder, a few more challenges arise, they are however dealt with swiftly. After this, we arrive on time in Kampen, where everything is being prepared for the event.
